Scaffolds: how much help we show

Sentence starters, hints, worked examples - when they appear and how to control them.

Three levels

Scaffold level controls how much support is shown alongside each activity. You set a default per student in Settings; it can also vary per activity based on the skill's difficulty.

  • Minimal - just the question. Use this when you want a clean test of recall.
  • Moderate - sentence starters and a hint button on writing tasks. Reasonable default for most students.
  • Maximum - sentence starters, paragraph frames, worked examples, and proactive hints. Use during teaching of new skills or for students who struggle to begin. The "How to do it" steps and the word list start open.

More help after "I don't get it"

When your student skips with "I don't get it", that skill gets one more level of support on top of your setting (up to the maximum), so the next lesson or question on it comes back easier. Each right answer on their own takes one level back off, so the extra help fades as they get it.

Asking for hints doesn't hurt

Tapping 'I'm stuck - give me a hint' is encouraged. We don't penalise XP for using hints; the goal is learning, not gaming the score.

A right answer given after a hint doesn't count towards mastering the skill, though, and it doesn't count against it either. It shows they can do it with help, so the skill comes back another day for them to try on their own.
